On Friday, the Cornerstone volleyball squad held a double header against two non-conference opponents. The Golden Eagles went 2-0 for the day after beating both Indiana University-South Bend and Grace Bible with a 3-0 sweep. After the day, Cornerstone improves to 5-7 overall.
In match one against the visiting team, Indiana University-South Bend, the Golden Eagles were able to take the first two sets with ease, 25-16 and 25-16. However, the Titans were not going to go away easily forcing the third and final set into a nail-biter. The score went back and forth but eventually the Golden Eagles were able to take the third set with a 27-25 advantage.
In match two against Grace Bible, Cornerstone breezed through three sets and sent the visiting time home in less than an hour. The Golden Eagles topped their opponents 25-2, 25-10, and 25-16. The squad had their highest hitting percentage during the first set at a .650 pace compared to Grace Bible's -.296 during the set.
Leading the Way
In Friday's match against IU South Bend the Golden Eagles were led by Kim Weaver's 40 of the team's 46 assists, Abby Miedema's 17 digs and Cailie Johnson's 13 kills. In the Grace Bible match, Johanna Egerer led the way with 11 kills. Egerer and Megan Newhouse notched 12 digs a piece during the match while freshman Megan Petrick dished out 25 assists.
Cornerstone will begin Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play when they travel to Sylvania, Ohio, on Wednesday when they face Lourdes University. The Gray Wolves hold a 7-4 overall record and a 0-1 record in the WHAC. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
