The Golden Eagles played their home opener in front of nice sized crowd on a beautiful night for soccer. The Trojans from Taylor got on the board first off of a free kick. Cornerstone was called for a hand ball outside of the box in the 9th minute of play. Molly Drooger hit a ball around the wall and it took a little bit of a bad hop on Megan Lamb and bounced over her hand as she dove out for the ball. The Trojans were beating the Golden Eagles to the 50-50 balls over the first 20 minutes or so but then the Golden Eagles started to get more of the ball and created a few good chances to finish off the first half of play. Cornerstone outshot Taylor 7-2 in the first half of play. The Golden Eagles came out strong to start the second half and created more good chances but couldn't finish them off. We did very well until we got in their final third and then we just didn't make the last good pass to put a good shot on goal. Cornerstone continued to push for the equalizer leaving themselves open to counter attack chances and Taylor got a couple of good opportunites later in the game because of it. The Golden Eagles defensive four (Kate Wiegman, Teigan Mitcham, Maylani Siemasz, and Rachel Schutter) played very well throughout the game limiting a good offensive team in Taylor to very few really good chances to score. Cornerstone will return to action on Monday morning when they take on Montreat College (who received votes in the preseason rankings). That game will kick on at 10:00 a.m. on Labor Day.
