During day one of the Westminster Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Cornerstone University volleyball squad split a pair of matches to Olivet Nazarene and the Red Storm from Dixie State.  The Golden Eagles sought to have a successful day two of the tournament.  The women defeated Hope International with a dominant 3-0 victory but losing a tough match later in the day to the tournament host, Westminster, 3-2.

Against Hope International earlier in the day, the Golden Eagles attacked at 65 percent pace during the three sets.  Their best pace at 80 percent occurred during set two winning 25-14.  Hope International challenged the Golden Eagles during the first set but Cornerstone was able to hold onto the lead finishing 25-22.  Cornerstone cruised through the final two sets to take the win.  Senior Abby Miedema led the team with 13 kills while Cailie Johnson adding 10 respectively.  Two Golden Eagles, Johnson and Becky Albrecht, were in double figures in the kill column.  As a team, Cornerstone won the advantage over Hope International getting seven blocks compared to their opponent's five.

The second match of the day came down to the fifth and final set but Wesminster rallied late in the set to take the victory.  Westminster won the first set with a score of 25-22.  The Golden Eagles came back to win the second and third sets to give them a 2-1 advantage.  However, Westminster would not give up and would take the fourth set from Cornerstone.  In the final set of the match, the Golden Eagles held a 13-11 advantage but Westminster went on a 5-1 run to steal the match.  The Golden Eagles attached at an average 57 percent pace during the second match of the day compared to Westminster's 58 percent pace.  Four Cornerstone players notched in double figures in the dig department; Miedema leading the way with 26.  Chelsea Lake was able to send down 16 kills for the Golden Eagles.

Up next for the Cornerstone volleyball squad will be in Santa Barbara, Calif., on August 27 to face Westmont College who was recently tabbed number 16 in the NAIA preseason poll.   The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (EST).  Cornerstone is now 2-2 overall during the 2013 campaign.
