After heading out west on Wednesday, Aug. 21, the Cornerstone volleyball team faced Olivet Nazarene University and Dixie State College during day one of the Westminster Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The Golden Eagle squad defeated Olivet Nazarene (3-1) but had a tough battle in the second match against Dixie State dropping the match (1-3) giving Cornerstone their first loss of the 2013 campaign.

During the first match of the day, Abby Miedema and Kim Weaver all had 18 digs respectively against the Tigers.  Cailie Johnson led the team with 14 kills while Murphy Heyer added 13 kills to help Cornerstone.  After dropping the first set with a 25-16, the Golden Eagles rallied to win the final three sets with 25-17, 25-23, and 25-20 scores.

The Golden Eagles looked to repeat their success during the second match of the day but came up short to the Red Storm squad.  After falling in a close 22-25 set one, Dixie State continued in set two with a dominate 25-16.  The third set Cornerstone would have to win to keep the match alive.  With the score tied at 23, Libby Webber tallied a kill to put Cornerstone ahead 24-23, forcing the Red Storm to call a timeout.  Cornerstone won the set with the next point coming off a block from Cailie Johnson.  During the fourth and final set, Dixie took the set and match with a final of 25-21.  Johnson led all players during the match with 18 kills while attacking at a .484 pace.  Miedema led the team and all players with 17 digs during the final match of the day.  As a whole, Cornerstone was able to notch 13 blocks compared to Dixie State's seven blocks.
