The Cornerstone University baseball team split a double header today against Aquinas at DeWitt Field in Grand Rapids.
In game one, Cullen Montgomery started on the mound and got the win with seven strong innings. The Golden Eagles won 8-1. Montgomery gave up one earned run on seven hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Kyle Marburger came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings.
Offensively, Cornerstone had eight hits and was led by Travis Gordon and Nick Covello who each had two hits. Covello scored two runs and drove in one run. Davis Martin was 1-4 with three RBI in game one.
Game two went along smoothly until the 5th inning when things got ugly for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead into the 5th in spite of not having a hit, but the tide turned quickly in Aquinas' favor. The Saints brought nine men to the plate in the 5th and 14 men to the plate in the 6th and went on to defeat Cornerstone 13-1.
Brandon Willard started on the mound in game two and was saddled with the loss. Willard went four innings in which he gave up four runs, one earned, on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Cornerstone offense was held in check by Aquinas pitching and was only able to muster one hit and on unearned run. Nick Covello was 1-2 with a single in the sixth inning to break up a no-hitter, a walk, and a run scored.
The two games bring Cornerstone's record to 13-24 overall and 8-14 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play. The Golden Eagles will host the University of Northwestern Ohio in four WHAC games to wrap up conference play on Friday and Saturday.
