The Cornerstone University baseball team swept Lourdes in a double header today in Toledo, Ohio. The Golden Eagles won game one 13-5 and game two 7-4.
In game one, the Cornerstone offense exploded with 13 runs on 16 hits, both season highs for the team. Ryan Harris and Zach Harbison led the offense. Harris had four hits, two runs, and three RBI. Harbison was on base four times, scored two runs, and drove in two runs including a long home run to left field in the first inning. Tyler Krahn also chipped in three hits for the Golden Eagles.
Brandon Willard started on the mound for Cornerstone and pitched 7.1 strong innings. He gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits with six walks and two strikeouts. Willard earned the win and is now 2-1 on the season.
Cullen Montgomery relieved Willard with 1.2 innings of shutout baseball. He gave up zero hits while walking one and striking out two.
Cornerstone started game two with three runs in the first inning to stake starting pitcher Kyle Marburger to a lead. Marburger pitched well going five innings giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits with six walks and four strikeouts. He earned the win and is now 2-0 on the year.
Justin Geerts pitched the final two innings in relief and picked up his second save. He gave up one hit and one walk while striking out two in two shutout innings.
Nick Covello was 1-2 with a triple and two RBI and also had two sacrifice bunts which led to two runs for the Cornerstone offense. Jake Kuhn was 2-2 with a double, a run and an RBI. Tyler Krahn also drove in two runs in the second game.
The two wins bring the Cornerstone record to 11-16 overall and 6-6 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Golden Eagles will play again at Madonna in Livonia, Mich. on April 12.
