(Adrian, Mich.) The Golden Eagles started fast and didn't look back today as they swept Siena Heights 11-3 and 8-5. Lauren Pasciak and Heidi Warmelink hit back to back singles and Megan Oberst followed with a 3-run shot to put Cornerstone on the board. Jenna Weightman came up next and hit a single followed by a walk to Ashley Niedermayer. Rachel Bode and Tahni Bruno both collected RBI's on fielder choice plays to make it 5-0 in the top of the first. Cornerstone added another in the second inning on a Heidi Warmelink homer and put up another five spot in the third. Cornerstone scored five on two hits (singles by Haley Castillo and Lauren Pasciak) and a combination of walks, errors, and wild pitches by the Saints. Siena Heights scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth but both teams went scoreless in the fifth and the game was ended after the fifth by the mercy rule.
Haley Castillo singled and scored on an error to put Cornerstone up 1-0 in the first inning of game 2. Siena Heights responded with one in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at 1-1. The Saints took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs on three hits and an error. Cornerstone go two back in the top of the fourth inning. Jenna Weightman double and scored on an error and Haley Castillo hit an RBI single to pull the Golden Eagles to within one run at 4-3. Cornerstone took the lead in the top of the fifth with four runs on four hits. Heidi Warmelink, Jenna Weightman, and Harlie Sherman picked up RBI's for the Golden Eagles. Siena Heights made it 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth on a couple of singles and a wild pitch. Cornerstone added a little cushion in the top of the seventh inning. Harlie Sherman drew a walk, advanced to third on a single to right by Rachel Bode and scored on a Tahni Bruno ground out. Heidi Warmelink struck out two of three and retired the side to seal the victory for the Golden Eagles.
Cornerstone will play their home opener tomorrow against Madonna. Both teams are 2-0 in the WHAC. The first pitch is at 4:00 p.m.
