(Winona Lake, Ind.) The Golden Eagles played Spring Arbor University at Grace College today and came away with two 6-1 victories over the Cougars. Cornerstone scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Haley Castillo led off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Lauren Pasciak, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Heidi Warmelink single to make it 1-0. Megan Oberst followed with a double to bring in Warmelink to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead. Spring Arbor got one back in the top of the fourth to make it 2-1. The Golden Eagles added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lauren Pasciak and Heidi Warmelink both singled and then scored on a Megan Oberst double to make it 4-1. Jenna Weightman reached on an error and then Harlie Sherman hit a deep single to center to knock in Oberst and Weightman to give the Golden Eagles a 6-1 lead. Warmelink scattered five hits and improved to 8-1 with the win.
Cornerstone played as the visitors in the second game and picked up two early runs in the top of the first inning. They started the inning much like they did in game 1. Haley Castillo hit a bunt single, Lauren Pasciak hit a sacrifice bunt to move Castillo to second. Warmelink then walked and Oberst knocked in Castillo with a single up the middle. Warmelink later scored on a wild pitch to put Cornerstone up 2-0 after the top half of the inning. Megan Oberst made it 3-0 in the third. Oberst singled and later scored on an error. Rachel Bode started the sixth inning with a single and scored on an error to put the Golden Eagles up 4-0 and the Golden Eagles added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Jenna Weightman hit a 2-run shot over the center field fence. The Cougars scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh but Rachel Nelson limited Spring Arbor to just one run as the Golden Eagles improved to 16-2 on the season. Nelson improved to 5-1 from the circle.
Cornerstone will open WHAC play on the road at Siena Heights on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
