The Cornerstone University baseball team welcomed conference powerhouse, Indiana Tech (RV), on Friday afternoon for a WHAC double-header at DeWitt Field. With a four game winning streak on the line, the Golden Eagles dropped both contests to the Warriors.
In the first game, Cullen Montgomery started on the mound for the Golden Eagles and pitched five innings. Montgomery gave up six unearned runs and three earned runs on nine hits with two walk and four strikeouts. The right hander took the loss and is now 1-2 this season from the mound.
Kyle Marburger came in on relief in the sixth inning to pitch the final four innings. The freshmen gave up only one hit and allowed zero runs scored. The Peru, Ind., native walked four and struck out two Warriors.
The Golden Eagles' offensive was led by catcher Zach Harbison and center-fielder Tyler Krahn connecting for two hits, going 2-for-4 during game one. Left-fielder Travis Gordon and Harbison scored the two runs for Cornerstone while right-fielder Tom Enslen tallied the lone RBI for the Golden Eagles. As a team Cornerstone connected on nine hits and made two errors defensively.
During the second game, Ryan Harris (3-1) started on the mound for Cornerstone. The freshman pitched 5 1/3 innings and dropped his first game of the season. The righty gave up one unearned and two earned runs on four hits with eight walks and four strikeouts.
During the fifth inning, Justin Geerts came on to relieve Harris to finish the final 1 2/3 innings for the Golden Eagles. Geerts allowed zero runs with zero hits while striking out two batters.
Cornerstone was unable to get on the scoreboard and tallied only two hits during game two. Defensively, the Golden Eagles played better than game one with zero errors. Bohl and Gordon were the lone Cornerstone players who tallied hits during the second game.
The Golden Eagles drop to 7-12 overall and 2-2 during league play. The Warriors from Indiana Tech ended CU's four-game winning streak and home streak during Friday afternoon. Cornerstone will host Indiana Tech again on Saturday afternoon for a double-header scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
