The Cornerstone University baseball team opened its Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) schedule with a double header sweep of Siena Heights University today.
In the first game, Cullen Montgomery started on the mound for the Golden Eagles and pitched an outstanding seven innings. He gave up one unearned run on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. He earned the win to bring his record to 1-1 on the season.
Brandon Willard came on in relief and pitched the last two innings for Cornerstone. He gave up three hits and one unearned run with two walks and one strikeout.
Zach Bohl and Nick Covello carried the Golden Eagle offense with two hits each. Bohl went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI. Covello was 2-4 with two runs and two RBI. Cornerstone scored its seven runs on seven hits and made two errors defensively.
In the second game, Ryan Harris pitched a complete game for Cornerstone University and earned the win. Harris pitched seven innings giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts. He is now 3-0 this season.
Nick Covello stayed hot in the second game and went 3-3 with one run and one RBI. Tyler Krahn had the big hit of the day with a bases loaded double in the third inning to drive in two runs and give Harris a lead that he never gave back. The Golden Eagles scored four runs on six hits without making an error.
After four straight wins, Cornerstone is now 7-10 overall and 2-0 in the WHAC. They will resume play next Friday at Indiana Tech.
