(Clermont, Fla.) Cornerstone kept up its winning ways today with two late inning rallies. The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the third inning but fell behind 2-1 in the fifth to Mount Vernon. Lauren Pasciak started the top of the seventh with a single. Haley Castillo lined out to center field. Tahni Bruno reached on an error and then Megan Oberst knocked in a run to tie the game at 2-2. Heidi Warmelink then knocked in the winning run with an RBI single to give Cornerstone a seventh inning come from behind victory. Warmelink also picked up the win to improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Golden Eagles went down 4-0 to University of St. Francis (Ill.) through five innings in the second game. Cornerstone started the comeback in the top of the sixth. Megan Oberst drew a walk and Heidi Warmelink followed that with a two run shot to make it 4-2. St. Francis responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning to get the lead back to four (6-2). The Golden Eagles looked to be done at that point but they mounted another comeback in the top of the seventh inning. Tahni Bruno and Haley Castillo singled to start the inning. Both runners advanced on a balk call and Lauren Pasciak hit an RBI single to make it 6-3. Heidi Warmelink stepped up and cleared the bases with a home run to tie the game up at 6-6. Jenna Weightman followed the Warmelink shot with a solo shot of her own to give the Golden Eagles a 7-6 lead. Rachel Bode grounded out and Harlie Sherman flied out to end the inning with Cornerstone in front for the first time in the game. Warmelink then finished out the game with three up and three down in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 5-1 on the season. Cornerstone improves to 8-2 on the year.
Cornerstone will play their last two games of their Florida trip tomorrow against Spring Arbor and a rematch against Mount Vernon in Game 2.
