(Grand Rapids, Mich.) The Golden Eagles played their home opener in front a
large crowd on a beautiful September day but they had a hard time finishing
their chances on the day and ended with a 2-1 defeat to Hope. Cornerstone
began the game with a flurry of chances and played well encouraged by the
energy of the crowd. Cornerstone had the better of the play and chances
but it was Hope that struck first in the 39th minute and they took a 1-0 lead
into halftime. The second half proved to be a much more even match and
the Golden Eagles seemeda little weary. Hope notched their second
goal in the 70th minute of play. Cornerstone did battle back and Jen
Kuipers brought the Golden Eagles to within 1 on an individual effort when she
slipped by her defender and slotted home her first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles played inspired soccer over the last few minutes and created
some chances but were unable to put in the equalizer. Cornerstone drops
to 0-2 on the season. The young Golden Eagles will continue their tough
non-conference schedule this weekend when they travel to NY to take on Houghton
on Saturday and Roberts Wesleyan on Monday.
