The Golden Eagles shot 42% (24-57) from the field during the game which included 3-13 from long range.
Cornerstone hosted Spring Arbor on Friday night for their first game of the season and their first game of the WHAC/CL Challenge. The Golden Eagles notched their first win of the 2012-2013 campaign for coach Elders. The Cougars of Spring Arbor jumped out to an early 8-0 lead but after a hard drive to the basket by Wes Hudson at the 11:42 point, the Golden Eagles closed in on the lead, 8-10. With 4:14 left in the first half, Cornerstone pulled within one off Shane Moreland's free throws but the Cougars maintained the lead 34-29 heading into halftime.
During the second half, the Golden Eagles took the lead, 39-38, after a Wes Hudson layup. Cornerstone continued to lead the rest of the half with their largest lead at the 11:43 mark after a jumper from Ty Mason. Hudson played tough defense with three minutes remaining, stole the ball from a Cougar player and passed to a wide open Moreland for a layup. With one minute on the clock, Cornerstone closed the game when Hudson drove in the lane, made the shot and was fouled. After converting the free throw, Cornerstone rode their way to a 66-56 win for the Golden Eagles. With the win, Cornerstone is 1-0 while Spring Arbor drops to 0-1 overall.
The Golden Eagles will continue WHAC/CL Challenge when they host Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
