Men's Soccer - Sat, Oct. 20, 2012

The Golden Eagles suffered a big set back at Marygrove last week and thought they would have to win out to clinch the WHAC but Aquinas lost 2-1 to Indiana Tech today so that opened the door for the Golden Eagles to clinch the WHAC and the first seed tonight with a win over Davenport and that is exactly what they did.  Cornerstone went up 1-0 late in the first half on a Brian Nimmo goal.  Nimmo took a pass from Jake Stanko and beat the Panther GK with just :43 seconds left in the half.  The Golden Eagles out shot the Panthers 10-3 in the first half of play.  Cornerstone started the second half much like they finished the first half.  Brian Nimmo hustled down the left flank and won a 50-50 ball with a defender, turned and played a ball into Isaac Grotenhuis in the box who settled the ball with one touch and hit a ball into the far post for the second goal.  Cornerstone struck again just nine minutes later on a corner kick.  Matt Osorio served a nice ball into the box and Brice Snellink headed in his second goal of the season from about 6 yards out to give Cornerstone a 3-0 lead.  Matt Osorio then finished off the scoring by hitting a long range bomb into the upper left side of the goal.  Cornerstone clinches the WHAC title and secures the #1 seed with the win combined with a 2-1 Aquinas loss to Indiana Tech.  Cornerstone improves to 11-3-1 overall and 8-1 in the WHAC.  The Golden Eagles will have the week off and will conclude WHAC play next Saturday when they travel down to play Indiana Tech.  That game will start at 3:00 p.m.
