On Saturday, the Golden Eagles men's soccer team welcomes WHAC foe Davenport to Cornerstone stadium. Prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff, Cornerstone will honor its 13 seniors— Kyle Breckan, Isaac Grotenhuis, Trevor Hunt, Tyler Mitchell, Brian Nimmo, Matt Osorio, Jesse Pipe, Josh Rimel, Doug Sjoerdsma, Brice Snellink, Jake Stanko, Brian Wierenga, and Jordan Wilson.
A Look at the Golden Eagles
Cornerstone currently sits in first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier standings, sporting a 10-3-1 record overall and a 7-1 mark in conference action. After a disappointing loss in overtime to Marygrove last Saturday, the Golden Eagles are eager to notch a few more wins before wrapping up conference action. This past Wednesday Cornerstone topped Lawrence Tech, 6-2, in Southfield, Michigan.
As a team, Cornerstone is ranked 24th in the NAIA for Total Shutouts of five this season. Brian Nimmo is tied for third in the WHAC for his five assists.
Forward Isaac Grotenhuis leads Cornerstone with 17 points off seven goals and three assists on the season, followed by midfielder Jake Stanko's 14 points (7 goals). Midfielder Brian Nimmo has dished out five assists this year to lead the Golden Eagles. Goalkeeper Kyle Breckan has started in all 14 contests in goal for Cornerstone and holds a 1.150 goals-against average. The netminder also has tallied 58 saves on the year (.773 save percentage).
A Look at Davenport
Davenport enters Saturday's contest with 8-5-1 overall record and a 4-2-1 posting in conference action. Stuart Collins and JC Smith pace the Panther's balance attack with three goals and four assists, respectively. Mirza Harambasic and Kevin O'Brien have split time in the net for Davenport this year, allowing a total of 19 goals. O'Brien leads the way holding a 1.030 goals-against average, .735 save percentage and two shutouts.
What to Watch For
The Cornerstone University men's soccer team is having one of their best seasons in program history. In 2006 the team finished 11-1-8 overall and 8-1-3 in conference action. After Saturday, the Golden Eagles will travel to Fort Wayne for their final WHAC match of the season. Cornerstone will face Indiana Tech on October 27 with kickoff set for 3 p.m.
