The Cornerstone volleyball squad participated in the Saint Francis Big Guns Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Golden Eagles went 2-2 on the weekend improving their overall record to 18-6 overall. Prior to the weekend, Cornerstone won its last four matches, most recently a 3-0 victory at UM-Dearborn on Wednesday.
On Friday the Golden Eagles finished the day 1-1 beating the Trojans of Trinity International and falling to host team, Saint Francis. In the first match of the day, Cornerstone hit .362 in registering 41 kills. The Golden Eagles registered a team 7 blocks while Johanna Egerer led the way with four blocks in the match. Kim Weaver dished out 29 assists while Abby Miedema totaled 15 digs. In the second match of the day, Saint Francis beat Cornerstone 3-1. For the match, USF hit .288 in registering 56 kills, while Cornerstone recorded 60 kills at a .255 pace. St. Francis held an 8-6 edge in blocks and a 62-57 edge in digs. Abby Miedema posted 22 digs to lead all players.
On Saturday Cornerstone wrapped up the classic finishing 1-1 with their win coming from Saint Ambrose while dropping the Ashford match. The first match of the day resulted in a tough 3-2 loss against Ashford University. The Saints registered 56 kills compared to Cornerstone's 69 kills. The Golden Eagles notched a .206 attacking pace while the Saints attacked at a .213 speed. In the second match of the day, Cornerstone bounced back and finished Saint Ambrose 3-2. During the match, Becky Albrecht tallied 17 kills, Weaver dished 45 assists, and Miedema tallied 14 digs for the Golden Eagles. The squad attacked at a pace of .307 to edge the Fighting Bees.
Highlighting the weekend, the USF Big Guns Classic named an All-Tournament Team. Cornerstone's Abby Miedema was named to the team with her strong defensive play. Miedema posted 73 digs overall during the tournament.
After breaking from WHAC play, the Golden Eagles will return to conference play when they face Indiana Tech on Wednesday. Game will take place at 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
