On Saturday, the Cornerstone volleyball squad held a double header against two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponents. The Golden Eagles proved why they are one of the better teams in the conference with two impressive sweeps against Marygrove and Concordia. With the wins, Cornerstone improves to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Marygrove falls to 7-11 overall and 0-4 in the conference while Concordia drops to 13-16 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
In match one against the visiting team, Marygrove, the Golden Eagles plowed through the Mustangs in three sets. Game one was highlighted by Cornerstone's .414 attacking percentage while Marygrove notched a .143 attacking percentage. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead, 12-5, and rolled their way through the first game only allowing Marygrove win one more point in the game. The final for game one went to Cornerstone, 25-13. Cornerstone found themselves in a more tough battle with the visiting team. The score was even at 6's early on in the game; however, the Golden Eagles gained moment and finished game two, 25-18. In the third and final game of the match, Cornerstone continued their dominant play with a 25-10 win to take the match from Marygrove. The squad held a .406 attacking percentage while Marygrove was held to a .095 percentage.
In the second match of the day, Cornerstone swept the Cardinals of Concordia (25-12, 25-11, 25-17). The Golden Eagles held the Cardinals to low attacking percentages in each of the three games. The Cardinals tallied a -.036, -.217, and .160 attacking percentages in Saturday afternoon's match. The Golden Eagles notched a team 39 digs, 42 kills, and 4 team blocks.
In Saturday's match against Marygrove the Golden Eagles were led by Kim Weaver's 36 assists, Johanna Egerer's nine digs, and Megan Newhouse's 14 kills. In the Concordia match, Cailie Johnson led the way for the Golden Eagles with 10 kills. While Abby Miedema notched 15 digs in the match.
Cornerstone will travel to Dearbon on Wednesday when they face UM-Dearborn for another WHAC match-up. The Wolves hold a 11-9 overall record and a 1-4 record in the WHAC. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
