Wednesday night was the annual 80's night and Night of Nets for the Cornerstone volleyball squad. In front of a crowd of roughly 875 screaming fans dressed up in 80's attire, the Golden Eagles did not disappoint. While hosting WHAC foe, Aquinas College, Cornerstone swept the Saints, 3-0, to impress the packed arena. With the win, No. 22 Cornerstone advances to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Meanwhile, Aquinas drops to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Chelsea Lake held the game-high 14 kills during Wednesday's match-up against Aquinas while Kim Weaver dished out 36 assists. The Golden Eagles had a set-high .389 attacking percentage during the second set against the Saints. Cornerstone held Aquinas to only 29 kills while hitting only .057 in the final set of the match. The Saints were led by Megan Toth's nine kills and Nicci Thomas' 22 assists on the night.
During the first set, Cornerstone found themselves playing behind for most of play. However after Chelsea Lake's kill, the score was even 21-21 and the Golden Eagles never looked back. Cornerstone took three straight points making it match point for the squad. Aquinas wasn't ready to give up and tallied a point for a score of 24-21. Off an Aquinas service error, Cornerstone took set one, 25-22.
The Golden Eagles came out strong with a dominant attacking play to go ahead of Aquinas, 8-0. Aquinas notched a few points themselves but not until a 13-5 lead did the Saints call a timeout. Cornerstone continued their strong play and took set two off a Kate Zwier kill, 25-14.
In the third and final set, Cornerstone rode their momentum while taking an early 17-8 lead over the Saints from Aquinas. Aquinas slowly chipped away at the lead to make the set point for Cornerstone, 24-19. Aquinas then notched a point but Cornerstone took the second set point with the final set and match point, 25-20.
The volleyball squad will continue WHAC play when they host two matches on Saturday. Marygrove and Concordia will be heading to Grand Rapids to face the Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon. Match times are set for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
