Cornerstone volleyball (9-3) continues road play for the Indiana Tech / Indiana Wesleyan Cross-Over Tournament. Matches for the tournament are set for Friday and Saturday. The Golden Eagles will have a challenge facing them this weekend when they play two nationally ranked opponents and one who is receiving votes for a national ranking. Cornerstone will face Marian University and Grace College (RV) on Friday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. On Saturday, Cornerstone will face No. 23 Taylor University and No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan. Match times for Saturday are set for noon and 2 p.m.
Cornerstone at a Glance
The Golden Eagles are coming off their first conference loss to No. 17 Madonna University (25-21, 25-23, 27-25), falling 3-1 in WHAC play this season. Chelsea Lake recorded a team-high eight kills to go along with a team-high 12 digs. Cailie Johnsons and Abby Miedema were also in double-digit figures with 10 digs respectively. Kim Weaver dished out 22 assists in addition to five kills.
Cornerstone is now fifth overall in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and maintains second place in digs per set category with 16.5.
Scouting the Competition
All four matches this weekend will test the Golden Eagle volleyball squad. The weekend will give Cornerstone a chance to redeem themselves after a 0-3 loss to No. 17 Madonna. The matches will also help Cornerstone receive more votes to improve their national ranking.
The Marian University Knights come into the match holding a 8-6 overall record. The Knights are coming off a loss to No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan (0-3) on Saturday, Sept. 22. Marian has played two other WHAC volleyball squads from Indiana Tech and Davenport. Both matches ended in a loss for the Knights.
The Grace College Lancers come into Friday's match holding a 12-5 overall record in the 2012 season. The Lancers are starting to become nationally recognized highlighting a big win over No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan (3-1) on September 5. Grace comes off a 3-1 win over Saint Francis and look to continue their dominate play against Cornerstone.
No. 23 Taylor University comes into this weekend's tournament with a 12-5 overall record. In the 2012 season, the Trojans have faced seven squads who are either receiving votes nationally or are currently in the top 25 teams in the country. In these seven matches, Taylor holds a 4-3 record against nationally recognized opponents.
Cornerstone's toughest opponent, No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan, enters the tournament coming off a dominant win over No. 18 Indiana East (3-1). The Wildcats hold a 7-1 overall record against nationally recognized opponents this season and look to continue this winning record against No. 22 Cornerstone. The Wildcats are 16-1 overall with their only loss coming to the hands of Grace College (RV).
