The No. 23 Cornerstone volleyball team started their home campaign with a 4-1 win over Lourdes College (25-17, 22-25, 25-9, 25-17) on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles advance to 2-0 in the conference and 7-2 overall. The Lourdes Gray Wolves fall to 0-2 in the conference and 6-13 overall.
Cornerstone came out strong with set one win, 25-17, but Lourdes wasn't willing to go away easily. In the second match, Lourdes took a close one against Cornerstone, 22-25, to even the match, 1-1. However, the Golden Eagles stood their ground and took back the final two sets from the Gray Wolves, 25-9 and 25-17, respectively.
Leading the Way
Collectively, Cornerstone was able to tally 51 kills, 51 assists, and 75 digs. Highlighting the team, Abby Miedema posted 7 kills, added an assist, and 24 digs. Meanwhile, Kim Weaver notched 4 kills, 41 assists, and 5 digs. Murphy Heyer and Kate Zwier lead the team with 9 kills apiece while Zwier hit a team high of .533. In the dig department, Larissa Deshetsky and Cailie Johnson helped the team with double dig numbers posting 16 and 10 individually.
Cornerstone continues their home stretch when they take on WHAC competitor, Lawrence Tech, on Saturday. Match time is set for 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles will then take to the road as they begin a 5-game away stretch. The stretch is highlighted by the Indiana Tech / Indiana Wesleyan Cross-Over Tournament on Sept. 28 & 29.
