On a cool and windy day, the Cornerstone Men's & Women's tennis teams took on Goshen College in non-conference action.
Both matches were tied at 4-4, leaving on just one court each to decide the matches.
Chris Reed sealed the deal for the Cornerstone win with a 7-6(9), 7-5 win, having to come from behind in both sets. On the women's side,
Amy Fouty pulled out a super intense 7-6(3), 7-6(2) win, having to win tie-breakers in both sets. For the women's team, this is their first team win, after having lost a few very close matches already.
The men's match started out with CU and Goshen splitting the number 2 & 3 doubles spots, with the CU team of
John Andrew and
Chris Reed pulling out the win at #2. That left on only the #1 doubles match, in which the Cornerstone team of
Austin Hunt and
Elijah Yi needed some late heroics to come back and pull out at 9-7 victory. Taking a 2-1 lead into the doubles, Cornerstone got quick wins from
Alex Tarnow at #6 singles and
Andrew Son at #5 singles, before dropping excellent matches at 1, 2, and 4. With the match then tied at 4 all,
Chris Reed brought it home in a thrilling match.
On the women's side, CU started down 2-1 after doubles, with
Ashley Greene and
Allison Rusticus picking up the lone victory at #3. Needing to then win 4 out of the 6 singles matches, the Cornerstone women embraced the challenge and won quickly at #3 singles (
Janie Silvers), #6 singles (
Allison Rusticus), and #4 singles (
Carrie Carr). CU then dropped the #1 and #5 spots, leaving the match tied at 4 all.
Amy Fouty then won her 2 tie-break match to seal the deal for Cornerstone.
Next up for both teams is our Alumni match, held on Saturday September 22 at 1:00 pm at Orchard Hills.
