The Cornerstone Men's & Women's tennis teams played in the ITA Midwest Regional tournament on Thursday through Saturday. This is the largest and most important singles and doubles tournament of the tennis season, as it is the qualifier for the National singles & doubles championship. There were many firsts for Cornerstone in this tournament. Janie Silvers
started out by winning her first match, which was the first win of any kind, let alone in the main draw, for a Cornerstone player. Later on Thursday, Austin Hunt
& Elijah Yi
both won three set matches in the consolation bracket to advance to the next day of play. They also won their first round doubles match against a very strong UNOH team, before falling to the #2 seed in the second round.
In action on Friday, Austin Hunt
continued his solid play, winning both of his singles matches to advance to the semi-finals played on Saturday. On Saturday morning, Austin defeated the #1 player from Marian University in a tough 3 set match. He then won the final, defeating his opponent from Spring Arbor in straight sets. In all, Austin won 5 straight singles matches to win the consolation bracket of the tournament. This is by far the best result any player from Cornerstone has had in this event and really sets a high bar for years to come.
