After coming off a disappointing loss to No. 8 Spring Arbor on Wednesday, the Golden Eagles looked to bounce back into the win column against Huntington University. The team rallied with intensity on Saturday afternoon. The Cornerstone women's soccer team picked up its third with of the season defeating Huntington, 2-1.
With the win, the Golden Eagles are now 3-1-0 on the season, while the Foresters fall to 3-1-0. It proved to be a good rematch from last year's match. In 2011, the Foresters were able to edge the Golden Eagles with a score of 3-2. Cornerstone was out to prove something on the afternoon. With the win, Cornerstone gives Huntington their first loss of the season.
Two different Cornerstone players recorded goals on the afternoon - Morgan Vance and Riley Steen. Maile Carigon and Steen were able to each chip in an assist. Brittany Hartman netted the lone goal for the Foresters.
Huntington took an early advantage in the fifth minute. Following a pass by Lisa Underwood, Hartman was able to pass the defense with a one-on-one with Cornerstone's goalkeeper, Kathy Butt. Hartman placed the ball to the right side of the netting pass Kathy. The goal was the forward's first of the season.
In the 39th minute, Huntington tried to up their advantage. After a shot by Underwood and a Kathy Butt deflection, Underwood took advantage of an open net. However, defender Kate Wiegman was in the right place to keep the ball out of the net and rendering the score 1-0 going into the half.
Huntington outshot the Golden Eagles in the opening stanza, 8-2.
The Golden Eagles wasted little time in the second period by dominating control of the ball. Cornerstone was able to get on the scoreboard during the 61st minute of play. Forward Carigon fired a shot from the right side that hit off the cross bar bouncing to the left midfielder, Riley Steen. Steen showed composure by placing the ball into the back of the net evening the score 1-1. With the goal, Steen records her first goal of the season but was involved in the action later.
Cornerstone did not look back after the goal while a roommate connection proved to be stellar. Steen sent a nifty cross into the left midfielder Morgan Vance, whom happens to be Steen's roommate, and Vance blasted the ball into the back of the net. The goal happened nearly seven minutes after Steen's goal in the 68th minute. With the goal, Vance netted her second of the season while Steen recorded her second assist of the season. Cornerstone now took advantage on the scoreboard, 2-1. The Golden Eagles limited the Foresters' chances the rest of the way, en route a 2-1 victory.
Cornerstone outshot Huntington in the second period 11-9 and won the battle of corner kicks, 4-2. Kathy Butt recorded nine saves in the Cornerstone net. Megan Soltow recorded three saves for Huntington.
The women's soccer team looks towards their next match, next Tuesday, for a matchup against Beltline rival, Davenport University. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at Cornerstone. Follow up-to-minute stats on Twitter.
