With Grand Rapids rivalries heating up, Cornerstone men's golf is set for match play against Davenport men's golf. This inaugural meeting is called the Beltline Cup.
The Cup is set for noon Tuesday at Pilgrim's Run Golf Club in Pierson, Mich.
This heated rivalry between the teams started a few years ago when the WHAC Tournamanet champion was determined. Cornerstone came away with the WHAC championship beating Davenport earning the chance to play in the NAIA National Tournament.
The NCAA has since adopted the match play for league championships. However, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference now plays a 54 hole stroke play to determine the league champion. This was mandated by the NAIA.
As a result, both Cornerstone and Davenport decided to kick off the season with an old tradition of a friendly match play.
Rules are as follows: Four players each from the Golden Eagles and Panthers go head-to-head singles matches and six more per side teaming up for best-ball matches in which the lowest score takes the hole.
Cornerstone Top Players: Zach Mick, Casey Vandenberg, Drew DeMarti, Bailey Matheison, and Brad Clevenger.
