The Cornerstone women's soccer team starts off their season with a win tonight as the Golden Eagles defeated Taylor University at Saint Francis Field, 2-1.
After an early goal by Cornerstone, Taylor evened the score before halftime. The score remained 1-1 through the second half to force overtime, setting up Rebekah Eggleston for the golden goal in the extra period to secure the Golden Eagles' win.
Cornerstone moves to 1-0 overall while Taylor falls to 2-1 overall. The Golden Eagles win over Taylor, gives them their first loss of the season.
In the ninth minute, Cornerstone took advantage of an early corner kick. Senior, Anna Stegink was the one to take control while sophomore, Kate Wiegman, took the corner off her head. The ball rebounded off Taylor's goalkeeper right to Morgan Vance to push the Golden Eagles in front 1-0.
As the game continued, both Cornerstone and Taylor had chances to score. However, in the 18th minute Taylor's Mollly Drooger took advantage and put the ball in the back of the net. Evening the score 1-1. While the score remained through the second half, Cornerstone had a late chance. Amanda Van Laar fired a shot from 25 yards out with a spectacular save by Taylor's goalkeeper.
In the extra period, Cornerstone's golden goal occurred in the end of the 96th minute. Following good possession by the Golden Eagles, Riley Steen sent in a cross from the left side leaving the ball to Josie Litty. Litty then passed to Eggleston and the rest was history with a Cornerstone victory, 2-1.
