After day two of the 2012 Early Bird Tournament in Dearborn, Michigan, the Golden Eagle squad finished their two matches today, Aug. 25, with wins. This tallies their tournament record 3-1 after beating Indiana University-South Bend and falling to Point Park University on Friday, Aug. 24. After the weekend tournament, the Cornerstone squad improves their overall record to 3-1.
Earlier this morning, the Golden Eagles were met with a challenge against Georgetown College but defeated the Tigers (3-2). The games between these two squads went back-and-forth with the set scores as follows: 25-20, 25-27, 29-27, 23-25 and Cornerstone taking the edge over the tigers and taking the final set ending 18-16. The Golden Eagles sent 54 kills down in the match against the tigers with Becky Albrecht and Cailie Johnson leading the way for the Golden Eagles with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Abby Miedema led the way for the defense with 19 digs.
In their second match, Cornerstone defeated their Chicago rivals, Trinity Christian, 3-1. The Trolls from Trinity Christian took the first set from the Golden Eagles winning 17-25. However, Cornerstone came back strong to sweep the Trolls in three sets, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-21. The Golden Eagles generated 53 kills altogether while Albrecht recorded a match-high 11 kills and Chelsea Lake followed close behind with 10 kills.
The Golden Eagle squad returns back to Grand Rapids and will continue their away schedule against another Grand Rapids opponent Aquinas College on September 12.
