GRAND RAPIDS (3/31) Freshman Haley Russell had a breakout day in three throwing events at the Grand Rapids Open hosted by Aquinas College.
The 2011 Pine River graduate began the day placing fourth in personal best and freshman record 125' 10" in the discus. The old mark was set by Erin Swinger in 2010.
Next, in the hammer throw, Russell took fifth in a personal best 131' 3" putting her third on the CU all-time list. Kayleigh Hammond improved her best to 128' 9" for sixth place.
Haley finished the day winning the shot put with a 38' 3.25" effort.
Audry Yonge (10:45.56), Julie Oosterhouse (10:47.74) and Julia Contreras (10:47.77) claimed the 4-6 spots on the CU all-time list in the 3000 meters placing 11-12-13 in the field of 43 runners.
In relay action, Lindsay Lipa, Larissa Hampton, Brittany Green and Lauren Pierce combined for second in the 4 x 100, running 49.40. In the 4 x 400, Katie Allers replaced Green. On the anchor leg Pierce chased down Calvin's Kaylea Brase on the backstretch then held a slight lead down the homestretch. Brase managed to pull even just before the line making the finish too close to call. The Golden Eagles took second to Calvin 4:04.68 to 4:04.67 in an exciting finish and excellent early season time.
