(Grand Rapids, Mich.) Zach Ripley's plan going into the Calvin
Knight Invitational was to break the course record of 25:10 set by Calvin's Jed
Christiansen. The weather and course conditions were perfect for the attempt,
and the senior nearly achieved his goal.
Ripley was accompanied by teammate Alex Green at for the
first two mile in 9:54, running at the front of the lead pack. By three miles
Zach was controlling the pack, but not the race. Christiansen, running
unattached held a ten second lead.
Ripley couldn't close that gap in the final two miles and
had to settle for a 24:56 personal best, fourteen seconds under the old course
record, but eight seconds behind Christiansen's new mark.
The five Golden Eagles still running all landed PR's.
Green finished tenth in 25:39, Stephan Larson was 19th at 25:47.
Adam Looman broke 27 minutes for the first time clocking 26:52 for 54th. Jared
Courtright chopped 69 seconds off his previous best running 27:00 in 60th.
Travis Mabe Lowered his best time to 27:25 to take 68th.
Cornerstone placed fifth out of fourteen teams. Allegheny
College of Meadville, PA won the meet with 48 points. CU's performance assures
they will move up in next week's NAIA rating from their current spot of
sixteenth in the top 25 poll.
