2013-14 Men's Track & Field
Men's Indoor Track & Field - Mon, Dec. 2, 2013

Overview

During the 2012-2013 season, eleven CU Track & Field men earned All-America honors including two NAIA National runners-up, two USA Track & Field Outdoor Nationals qualifiers and two USA Track & Field Junior Nationals qualifiers. The Golden Eagles finished ninth at the NAIA Indoor Championships, sixteenth at the NAIA Outdoor Championships and won six Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference event titles. A strong core of returners and a solid freshman class make the 2014 season look just as good.

Sprints

The 4x400 relay broke the indoor school record (3:15.61) and earned All-American honors last year.  Anchor leg, senior Ryan Versen (Grand Rapids, MI) was also the NAIA Indoor runner-up in the 400m. Versen toppled his own indoor school record clocking 47.99 at indoor nationals.  Freshman, William Russell (Pine Ridge Secondary School / Pickering, Ontario) ran 48.87 as a prep and steps in to fill one of three open 4x4 spots.  A pair of juniors, Alex Macias (Haslett, MI) and Nick Hayes (Holland, MI) could also contend for 4x400 legs.  A trio of sophomores fueled the 4x100 last year: Tyler Kubik (Sterling Heights, MI) Austin Hazen (Freeland, MI) and Jon Brinks (Hudsonville, MI).  Russell or fellow freshman John Mrosewske (Three Rivers HS / Constantine, MI) who posted times of 7.06 (60m) and 22.18 (200m), are great candidate to complete the 4x1 squad.

Distance

After one of the most productive seasons in school history, Louis Falland (Noriootpa, Australia) returns for his senior year. National runner-up in the mile at the NAIA Indoor Championships, Falland lowered the school records in the mile (4:07.57) and 800m (1:53.23) as well as anchoring a school record and All-America finish in the distance medley relay (10:05.62). Louis also earned conference titles in the 1,000m, mile and 3,000m at the WHAC Indoor meet. Fifth year seniors, Jared Courtright (Wyoming, MI) and Cody Risch (Mason, MI) add depth in their final seasons. An All-American at 3,000 meters in 2012, Courtright has bests of 8:37.28 in the 3k and 14:47.04 for 5,000 meters. Risch finished fourth at the USATF Outdoor Championships last June in the 20k race walk and has been the runner-up at the NAIA Indoor Championships in the 3,000m race walk in 2012 and in the 5,000m race walk at the 2012 and 2013 Outdoor Championships. He holds the CU records for the walk for 3,000m (21:02.18), and 5,000m (21:02.18), and was the 2013 WHAC champion in the 3,000m steeplechase

Hurdles

Current 400m hurdle school record holder, Ryan Versen (52.26) seeks a fourth nationals appearance in the event, and Deon Fox (Muskegon, MI) looks to improve upon his 60H time of 8.70 that ranks him fourth on the all-time indoor list.  Fox clocked a 14.71 in the 39" 110H at the USATF junior meet while entered in the decathlon last summer, and hopes to chase the 60H and 110H records held by current hurdles coach Paul Koutz

Jumps

The jump squad is anchored by vaulter and combination jumper Logan Norton (Comstock Park, MI).  In the pole vault, Norton broke his own indoor school record (15' 1") and scored in the Outdoor WHAC meet in the triple jump.  Two CU freshman, John Mrosewske and Josh Brand (Forest Hills Northern HS / Grand Rapids, MI) enter with state meet experience in the high jump.  Mrosewske was the 2013 Michigan division two runner-up with a 6'7" clearance, while Brand was a four-time Michigan division two qualifier in the event with a personal best of 6'3".  Norton and Fox are both WHAC scorers in the long jump with bests over 21 feet.

Throws

2013 saw school records in the shot put and javelin as well as freshman records in the discus, hammer and 35 pound weight throw. Ross Raymond (Tustin, MI) returns with the with the intention of extending his indoor and outdoor shot put records into national qualifying marks. Freshman, Gave Turner (Grand Rapids, MI / Forest Hills Eastern HS) earned Michigan division 2 All-State honors in the shot put adding depth in the event. Sophomore, Daniel Door (Wayland, MI) finished his first season second on the CU all-time list in the discus and is just outside the top five in the 35 pound weight throw.

Multi's

Sophomore, Deon Fox, broke both the freshman indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon records en route to qualifying performances in the NAIA decathlon and USATF junior decathlon in Des Moines, IA.  Fox will have freshmen John Mrosewske and Josh Brand joining him as training partners.  Mrosewkse comes in with a sprints and jumps background, while Brand was a jumper/vaulter who also threw 128'6" in the discus as a prep.  Both Mrosewske and Brand could threaten the freshman records in the heptathlon and decathlon.
