After winning their last two games, the Golden Eagles women's soccer team looked to continue their winning streak into Thursday's match against Bethel College. After a scoreless first half from both teams, Cornerstone played through the pouring rain and was able to notch in three goals to pick up their third straight win with the final score, 3-1.
With Thursday night's win, the Golden Eagles are now 5-1-0 on the season, while the Bethel Pilots fall to 3-3-0. The Golden Eagles lost 2-1 in OT to Bethel two years ago and tied 1-1 last season. After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles came out strong in the second. Cornerstone's first goal came in the 71st minute of play when freshman midfielder Kerri Hoffman assisted senior Riley Steen who shot from 25 yards and put the ball in the back of the net. Steen's goal was the second of the season and Hoffman's second assist of the season.
The Golden Eagles continued their tough pressure and scored again in the 79th minute when senior Anna Stegink played a ball off a corner kick into the six yard box where Steen hit the ball into the back of the net; making the goal her second of the game and third for the season.
Forward Kelley Ritsema notched the third and final goal for the Golden Eagles in the 82nd minute of play when Hoffman split the defenders with a pass to Ritsema who ran onto the ball and found herself one-on-one with the goalie. Ritsema contained her composure and placed the ball to the near post, making the score 3-0.
Bethel took advantage with the last minute of play coming off a transition when Kyla VanDerWeele played a ball to Megan McPherson who placed the ball to the right of Cornerstone's keeper, Kathy Butt, rendering the final score, 3-1.
Cornerstone will look past the weekend when they host Goshen College on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m.
