(Goshen, Ind.) The normally frigid temperatures and harsh wind were wonderfully absent at the 2012 Maple Leaf Invitational hosted by Goshen College. Cornerstone's men took advantage of the conditions, winning two events.
The day began with the 5,000 meter race walk. After a successful indoor season at the 3k distance, three CU freshmen got their first taste of the longer event. Nathan Vanderwall was aggressive from the start putting himself in third place one step behind Goshen's David Horst. The two maintained laps of 1:53 to 1:54 for twelve and one half laps. Vanderwall's third place finish time of 23:42.24 bettered the NAIA automatic qualifying standard earning him his first trip to nationals. He also bettered the freshman record of 24:04.04 set by Kelvin Shuneson in 2007.
Isaac Withrow took fifth in 25:02.94, less than three seconds off the NAIA provisional standard. Tyler Steigenga finished sixth in 25:53.14.
Ryan Versen won the 400 hurdles. Coming out of lane four, he made up the stagger on everyone in the outside lanes in the first 200 meters and extended his lead from there finishing in 55.10. Versen also took fourth in the 110 meter hurdles in 16.29.
In the 800 meters, Zach Yeo led from the gun, cruising to a 1:58.16 win.
